The programme is designed to meet 4 main objectives:

1. Build capacity in the design, configuration and construction of large-scale, Renewable Energy Systems with power outputs of over 1 Megawatts.
2. Stimulate and develop a spirit of innovation in the provision of novel solutions to the numerous problems of rural electrification in Africa.
3. Facilitate the development of a research culture to enable students explore the rapidly changing landscape of Renewable Energy Systems technology.
4. Mentor the students in the preparation of high quality

The program consists of course work, examination and thesis for a total duration of 6 semesters. Research work takes up 67% of the program while course work takes up 33%. All course work is done in the first year of study. The second and third years are dedicated to seminars, workshops and research. At the end of the second semester, each student is allocated an academic advisor to provide guidance in developing a research proposal. Once the proposal is approved by the School Graduate Studies Committee, the student is assigned two supervisors. The supervisors provide periodic reports on the student’s research progress.

1. Course EEF 710 (Renewable Energy Systems Design Project) is a practical project which the student designs and builds in the laboratory. The assessment is made after the student presents the laboratory implementation to the supervisor.
2. Course EEF 711 (Research Induction) is assessed by a panel of experts after the student makes an oral presentation to the panel.
3. Course FET 700 (Comprehensive Examination) is assessed in the form of a written examination which is structured to cover all the courses taught in the first two semesters (first year) of the PhD programme.
4. Course FET 798 (Thesis) is assessed in two components: the quality of the oral presentation made by the student and the quality of the thesis document. Both components are assessed by a panel of experts.
5. All other courses are assessed as a combination of continuous assessments and written examinations. Continuous assessments account for 30% of the mark assigned to each course, while the written examination accounts for 70% of the mark.

After completing the PhD programme in Renewable Energy, the student will be able to :

1. Design and build a large-scale Solar System with an output of more than 1 Megawatts
2. Design and build a Biomass Power System with an output of more than 1 Megawatts
3. Design and build a large-scale Wind Energy System with an output of more than 1 Megawatts
4. Design and build a Hydro-electric Power System with an output of more than 1 Megawatts
5. Provide Innovative Renewable Energy Solutions to the problems of rural electrification of African countries
6. Define and describe the major technological issues which are currently shaping the frontiers of Renewable Energy Systems technology
7. Prepare a PhD thesis of high quality

The doctoral programme was accredited by the Cameroon Ministry of Higher Education in 2014

The accreditation is valid over a 10 year period ( 2014 – 2024)
