Master of Science in Energy Studies is designed to produce graduates with essential abilities applicable in renewables and traditional energy industry.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Produce graduates with competency in energy technologies and systems to support growth of energy sector.
2. Produce energy professionals, who can apply their specialized knowledge for sustainable energy resource management
3. Produce graduates with ability to conduct innovative research and provide knowledge-based solutions to energy sector.
4. Train graduates for careers in industry, academics or research & development institutions

The programme is organized into three study tracks:

1. Renewable Energy
2. Energy Management
3. Energy and Environment

It is offered by course work (11 core & 3 electives), examination and thesis. The last two semesters are for research project and thesis writing. At the end of second semester, each student develops a research proposal that is approved by the School Graduate Studies Committee. The student is then assigned two supervisors who provide periodic progress reports.

Each course is assessed through a combination of continuous assessments (account for 40%) and final examination (account for 60%). Research project is assessed in two parts:

1. Through oral presentations made by the student to board of examiners to assess ability of the student to express themselves and demonstrate ownership of the work. This component takes 20% of the total mark
2. Thesis examination to assess the quality of the thesis document. This component takes 80% of the total mark

 
After successful completion of the MSc programme in Energy Studies, the student should be able to:

1. Evaluate energy resources, technologies and systems
2. Technically design and assess energy systems including Solar PV, Hydro-electric, Geothermal, Wind, and Bio-energy systems.
3. Undertake planning, development, management, economic analysis and life-cycle assessment of energy systems.
4. Conduct independent research and provide knowledge-based solutions to energy challenges for sustainable development
5. Show interpersonal and professional skills like leadership, project management, team work and communication for work in the industry, or in order to be able to continue toward a research career

The programme was accredited by the Kenya Commission for University Education (CUE) in 2013

The accreditation is valid over a 10 year period ( 2013 – 2022)
